Evil Creatures Do Southeast Asia Part 3
I’m sorry this update is late.  It’s been a real bitch finding a computer on this seemingly endless road trip through the backwaters of Myanmar.  From roadside bars to underground fight clubs, from school dances to a boomer-ridden festival deep in the heart of the Bago Yuma forest, we’ve been playing the best shows of our lives to throbbing crowds of screaming fans.  The locals are throwing money...

Evil Creatures in Southeast Asia, Part 2
Part 2 The first few days of our time in the Orient had been going famously—it was all champagne and roses, delicious Pho and horny Thai groupies.  We had no idea we would ever rise to this level of fame, even in a small and poor foreign land.  We still hadn’t met our benefactor, but he was referred to in hushed voices by the various bureaucratic hangers-on we had acquired—they said...

By D. Sykes Strange Missives…Mysteries of Phnom Penh…A Suitcase Full of Drugs and Money Our plane touched down in Phnom Penh in the midst of a torrential rainstorm—it was coming down sideways, in great icy dollops the size of cocktail onions.  Cassidy Anderson, Warsame Awale, and I, weak from the nineteen hour flight and reeking of scotch from the duty-free store in the...

Now that you know David
Now that there are some individual pictures of me on here it might be good for you all to know something more about him. I am the youngest of three children and as such I am quite the attention whore. I am now living in Minneapolis and am very easy to spot, as you might have learned from the pics of me I posted. So whether you see me on the street in my vw golf, on my shwinn beach cruiser, at a...

turn back now ep - the hard part is now officially...
Actually, that’s probably not true, as I have no conception of what mixing and mastering involve.  At any rate it’s basically all the way recorded.  Thanks due to Rob for running the board like a champion and Nicollet Park Recording Studios for their awesome space and vasty collection of various git-fiddles and amplifiers. Get excited and all that jazz. -D.

early morning call from Sony.
Due to an error on the Blanket Statement Records website, I’m still listed as the manager/booking agent for Turn Back Now! when it has been discussed that Claude and David manage the career of thier band, I book some shows for them. So I get a call early in the morning (11AM) from an A&R guy from sony, Jeff, something, currently looking for Minneapolis bands, he calls to set up a...

patrick callan, extraordinary criminal
Just a cautionary warning, the May 8th CD release show of Patrick Callan’s new record, “Tales of a Folk-Punk Nothing,” may be delayed due to Patrick’s arrest in the early morning hours of May 3rd. Patrick was arrested shortly after leaving the CC Club in Uptown Minneapolis, after a minor fracas involving an alleged drug dealer and his infant daughter.  Patrick was charged...

The Specialization Myth: The DIY Record Label Part...
Two years ago, my father had told me that with music on the internet, and just so goddamn much music out there. the career musician would be a thing of the past. This was when I was still sending my lo-fi demos to major record labels, hoping for a big break. Before looking at what I was actually doing, finding value in it, and looking for those ways to do it better. I don’t know if...

This is my first post
Hi I am David Huttner, and I am a blogging virgin. If there is anyone reading this that doesn’t know me or why I am making this post I will explain. I play with the band ”Turn Back Now” and this is the blog for our record label and everything else of interest to everyone involve. I am sure I will come up with something worth reading eventually and once I learn my way around this...

brenface: The cigarette hangs from his mouth at a nonchalant, nearly attentive angle, as if he has just enough attention left to divert from the music in order to keep the fag from falling from his lips. Mere moments ago, it was critical that he smoke that cigarette immediately, but something has struck him and the cigarette remains unlit between his lips. The reason for the abrupt neglect of...

The Specialization Myth: DIY Booking By Patrick...
I’m a singer songwriter and board member with Blanket Statement Records, considered a complete asshole by some and a really good person to know by others, with the help of Turn Back Now! and Disposition, we were able to create the momentum that is now, this really cool DIY label I’m happy to be a part of. My main point of contension among musicians is Specialization and waiting around...

d. sykes solo ep
Is on its way.  Currently debating whether I want to do an early Bob Dylan thing and leave it at acoustic guitar and voice, or add other instrumentation.  It was recorded on an old 4-track cassette machine (Robert Pollard eat yr heart out) by Rob Oesterlin in one session last Tuesday.  The tracklisting as it stands now is: 1.) Love is the Bullet and I am the Gun 2.) Flophouse Blues 3.) Ardent...
